Sampling Services

Standardized & Representative Cargo Sampling

Representative sampling is critical for any reliable quality result. Without proper sampling procedures, even the most sophisticated laboratory analysis cannot accurately reflect the true quality of a cargo. At GSI, we understand that the integrity of your quality data begins at the sampling point.

GSI performs sampling in full compliance with GAFTA, FOSFA, ISO and contract-specific standards to ensure laboratory data accurately reflects cargo reality. Our trained sampling technicians follow rigorous protocols that guarantee representative samples from any cargo type, size, or storage condition.

Sampling Services Cover

  • Manual and mechanical sampling during loading and discharge
  • Static sampling in silos and warehouses
  • Sealed lot sampling procedures for containerized shipments
  • Composite sample preparation with full traceability
  • Chain of custody documentation from field to laboratory

Our Protocols Ensure

GSI's sampling protocols are designed to meet the highest industry standards, providing you with reliable, defensible quality data that supports your commercial decisions and protects your interests in any dispute scenario.

Frequently asked questions

We follow internationally recognized sampling standards including GAFTA Sampling Rules, FOSFA guidelines, ISO 24333 for cereals and pulses, and ISO 5555 for oilseeds. Our procedures are also tailored to meet specific contract requirements, buyer specifications, and destination country regulations to ensure full compliance.

Manual sampling uses handheld probes and samplers operated by trained technicians, ideal for containers, bags, and smaller cargo parcels. Mechanical sampling employs automated systems integrated into conveyor belts or loading equipment, providing continuous representative sampling during bulk cargo handling. We select the appropriate method based on cargo type, quantity, and contract requirements.

We use systematic sampling patterns that cover all areas of the cargotop, middle, and bottom layers, as well as different locations across the storage space. For flowing cargo, we sample at regular intervals throughout the loading or discharge operation. Multiple incremental samples are combined into composite samples following statistical principles to ensure true representation.

Chain of custody documentation tracks every step of sample handling from collection to laboratory analysis. This includes sampling location, date and time, sampler identification, seal numbers, transport conditions, and laboratory receipt confirmation. This documentation is essential for arbitration proceedings and provides legal defensibility of your quality results.

We retain sealed reference samples for a minimum period as required by GAFTA and FOSFA rulestypically 90 days for standard trades. Extended retention periods can be arranged for specific contracts or upon client request. Samples are stored under controlled conditions to preserve their integrity for potential re-analysis or arbitration.

Yes, we provide specialized sampling services for containerized shipments. This includes sampling during container stuffing, sealed lot sampling from closed containers using approved sampling equipment, and sampling during container stripping. Each container is sampled according to established protocols with individual seal records and photographic documentation.
